Riquewihr was the administrative centre of a seigniory belonging to the feudal lords of Horbourg, who fortified it in 1291 and turned it into a town.
In 1324, the Horbourgs sold all their property to the Counts of Wurtemberg and their line died out soon afterwards. Riquewihr remained in the hands of the Counts, then the Dukes of Wurtemberg until 1793.
Their coats of arms are omnipresent in the town.
In 1525, the population was tired of being subjected to the tyrannical
treatment inflicted upon it by the Dukes and took part in the Peasant revolt.
